Life Coaching Institute of America™ (or LCIA) certifies and trains individuals to become Life Coaching Professionals.
The founders of LCIA have completed extensive “advanced” training through M.I.N.T (Inc.), the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, founded by Dr. William R. Miller & Dr. Steven Rollnick, the forefathers of Motivational Interviewing (MI). The training provided by LCIA will present its candidates with a valuable MI skill set that will enhance coaching skills and techniques not found elsewhere. LCIA utilizes the basic values of Motivational Interviewing.
Your Life Coaching Training offered through LCIA will be supported by the MI framework to include:
- Life Coach-Client relationship and communication skill building tools that distinguish LCIA’s collaborative approach to the coach/client relationship. We will cover in-depth reflective listening skills which is a key constituent and skill of MI techniques. Many of us assume we know how to listen- that listening is an easy skill- but truth be told, listening is a challenging and demanding skill to learn. Listening requires that Life Coaches fully engage with their clients. Effective Life Coaches put their ideas and agendas on the back burner and spotlight their client. It is often said within the Life Coaching community that an effective Life Coach listens 80% of the time and talks 20% with their clients, also referred to as the 80/20 rule.
- The MI Spirit~ the way of being with your client; strengthening and supporting your client’s desire and commitment for their desired change.
- Collaboration is a skill intended to develop partnership between the Life Coach and client whereas the Life Coach respects the client as expert in their life. Collaboration builds trust and facilitates open communication and rapport between Life Coach and client.
- Evocation is another critical component that our Life Coaches will learn. Our Life Coaching candidates will learn to elicit the client’s goals and desire for life changes. The effective Life Coach does not impose their own objectives or journey upon their client. Rather, through effective and intentional communication techniques taught by LCIA, they elicit desired change from within their clients.
- Autonomy of the client represents the belief that the true power for change resides within the client not the coach. This empowers the client and gives them responsibility for their choices and actions of change. The client is in the lead as they discover their design and delivery for change.
- Change Talk will be introduced at an basic level to provide Life Coaching candidates with insights specifically designed to hear the cues of their client’s communication and responses that will support the argument of change that the client desires. We will also explore ambivalence in clients where they may begin to experience conflicts about their desire for change and/or growth. The Life Coaching candidate will learn to reflect both sides of these ambivalent communications, known as a “double-sided reflection”. The effective Life Coach will effectively partner with their client as they work to achieve their desired transition and change their life and/or business transitions.
- Acronyms Toolkit often associated with MI. These acronyms will equip LCIA Life Coaching candidates with necessary references for the skills learned and practiced during their intensive LCIA training.
