The Anatomy of Change
As John Maxwell states, “Change is inevitable, Growth is optional”. Coaching is about growth as is the communication style of Motivational Interviewing. So let’s put this together!
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.
“Motivational Interviewing is a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment” (Miller & Rollnick, 2023).
This is a perfect foundation for synergy, the intentionality of integrating goals and skills to produce a great effect and support for student coaches and coaching clients. How might we be intentional about coach development around the objective of change? Motivational Interviewing supports the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics. Let’s dig in!
Some considerations that we will explore together in upcoming blogs.
1. Partnering with clients to maximize their focus of personal and professional success. This involves the coach believing that change is possible and trusting their client’s ability to identify and strategize ways to fulfill their change.
2. Listening with the intent to understand the client. Resisting the urge, on behalf of the coach, to impart their opinions, agenda or attempts to fix. Turning down the volume in the brain of the coach. Yes – easier said than done.
3. Intentionally talking with clients, not to clients, that evokes the client’s desire, ability, reason and/or needs for their identified focus of change.
Looking forward to our journey together as we explore the anatomy of change as it pertains to the coaching profession and the passionate training Life Coaching Institute of America (LCIA) provides.
