What Is Motivational Interviewing?

The Power of Helping People Maximize their Fullest Professional and Personal Potential

Life Coach Training – Level 1 ICF approved Coach Training Education

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative communication approach that helps people explore their ambivalence around their reasons, readiness, and motivation for change.

A MI coach encourages a client to discover what matters to them rather than providing opinion and advice. A MI coach respects a client’s process of exploration around their ambivalence and supports their motivation to explore options and/or solutions.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Effective collaborative coaching is not about imposing the coach’s solution, it is about creating a space where the client can explore possibilities, identify their own strengths, and develop motivation for the changes they want to make. LCIA understands that learning this skill is essential in coaching.

LCIA utilizes the basic MI communication skill set that emphasizes the spirit of MI; Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion and Empowerment to become an empathic listener with reflective skills that evoke motivation for change in clients. LCIA focuses on the skill of listening to change talk and helping clients explore their desire for change while respecting their autonomy.

Motivational Interviewing is an important part of coach education at Life Coaching Institute of America (LCIA). LCIA integrates MI with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Core Competencies and Code of Ethics to help developing coaches learn not only what coaching is, but also how to engage clients in meaningful conversations about change.
